It is absolutely impossible to count all of the insects living on our planet, however scientists still make attempts to determine at least an approximate number. First of all, they defined the term of insect itself. Insects are small, invertebrate arthropods. To this class of animals belong flies, mosquitoes, mole, bugs, ants, bees, butterflies and others, which were also separated into species. But it wasn’t enough, as all of the bugs, butterflies, ants and other insects are not the same and are extremely different from each other. So among all the species of insects there were subspecies set apart.
By now it is specified that there are around 4 millions of various species of insects on the Earth, but this number is very rough. Nobody knows how many of them are there on our planet. Only 625 thousands of species were described and this number required years of meticulous job. Every single kind of this insect had to be found, caught, studied, defined why it is different from the rest known kinds and specify its distinctive features.
We can say definitely only one thing: the amount of insects prevails all the other animals and fishes on Earth just by the number of species. And if you try to count every single insect inhabiting the planet, the number will be incredibly huge. Scientists are trying to solve this unsolvable task as much as they can.
There was invented one method which helped to count an approximate number of insects found in one square meter of fertile, moisturized ground. There can be around 500-20 000 of them. It means that one hectare of such ground hosts around 8 million of insects.
Among all the insects there are few thousands of verminous ones, which scientists are trying to study closer, in order to find the way to handle them.
Let’s take well known to everybody flies as an example. There are around 40 thousands of species. Among them there are harmless, like fruit flies, and there are also the ones spreading pathogenic germs or can cause a fatal result with their bites. For example forest black flies who tend to move around in hordes are known for the fact that their bites usually end up with a death for both people and animals. African tsetse fly spreads pathogenic germs of African lethargy, even ordinary room flies can spread a lot of dangerous viruses, like dysentery, cholera, hepatitis, tuberculosis, typhus and many more. The same typhus and other infectious diseases can be spread by lice and flea.
Among the poisonous spiders the most famous one is a black widow spider, inhabiting hot areas of South California, Chile and others. Poison of this spider causes enterospasm leading to death.
Many insects are also dangerous cause they are almost unnoticeable. The majority of insects are so tiny, that you can see them only by using a microscope, which means we can’t simply notice them when take ground into our hands or take a handful water from the pond.
When they say about Earth that this is a planet of people, the more correct way would be to say that Earth is a land of insects, among which there is a human living.
